The Thompson House was designed in 1888 by Cobb & Frost — the same architects behind the Newberry Library — and it reads that way from the moment you step inside. The exterior sgraffito walls and granite mosaic have been carefully refurbished. The mahogany staircase was hand-crafted to mirror the home's original balusters. A stained glass dome skylight crowns the second-floor landing. None of this was imported from a catalog.
A meticulous restoration beginning in 2009 layered in the kind of comfort the 19th century couldn't offer: an elevator serving every level, zoned radiant-floor heating, smart HVAC, and a lower-level spa with sauna, steam suite, and jacuzzi.
